The Man-Eater of the Zambezi - Nile Crocodile

At the edge of a remote village in northern Zimbabwe, just before sunrise, a fisherman stepped into the shallows of the Zambezi River. He never came back.

The crocodile that took him had been stalking the area for years. Locals say it was responsible for as many as a dozen deaths—men, women, and children lost to a ghost that surfaced only to kill. After a final attack, it was hunted down and killed by authorities.

The beast measured nearly 16 feet. Its hide was scarred, thick, and weathered by a lifetime in the wild. We secured that leather—not from a farm, not from a breeder—from a man-eater with a body count.

This isn’t exotic leather. This is a legacy of survival, death, and consequence—tanned and shaped into something you can wear.

A flip-flop made from the last kill it ever made.

Ethically Sourced Leather

We initially rejected the idea of using African leathers in our products. However, after learning about the role that exotic leathers play in conservation efforts, we changed our approach.

Our research revealed a thorough and ethical process. When an animal perishes, game wardens respond to harvest its remains accordingly. They distribute the meat to local villagers and turn the hide over to government officials. Those officials tag the hide and send it to a government-regulated tannery, while tracking it to ensure compliance with ethical and conservation standards. Toehold follows strict CITES laws that regulate the trade of endangered species and products.

By choosing our products, you’re doing more than investing in unmatched craftsmanship. Your purchase helps fund game warden wages, supports anti-poaching initiatives, and protects these exotic animals and their habitats for generations to come.
